After being one of Embraer’s principal showcases at the International Air and Space Fair (FIDAE) 2026, held last April, and as the Chilean Air Force (FACh) assesses the future of its tactical transport capabilities, the Brazilian company continues to present the C-390 Millennium as a leading option for a possible partial renewal or complementary addition to the current Hercules C/KC-130 fleet.
In recent comments to Reuters, Embraer chief executive Francisco Gomes Neto confirmed that the company remains in discussions with both Chile and Colombia regarding potential C-390 Millennium purchases. Designed for tactical airlift and air-to-air refuelling missions, the aircraft is undergoing strong international expansion, gaining ground in the military transport aircraft segment and positioning itself as a direct rival to the latest C-130J Super Hercules variants and, in certain operational settings, the Airbus A400M.
Gomes Neto acknowledged that procurement processes in Latin America are often prolonged by budgetary and administrative matters. Nevertheless, he noted the Chilean Air Force’s close historic relationship with the Brazilian Air Force and its interest in the operational capabilities offered by the KC-390 Millennium, particularly at a time when regional transport fleets are beginning to face ageing and logistical sustainment challenges.
Chilean Air Force Hercules modernisation
For Chile, any future KC-390 acquisition is linked to a long-term strategic debate. The Chilean Air Force has recently moved forward with an extensive modernisation and service-life extension programme for its KC/C-130H and KC-130R fleet, an initiative carried out domestically by the National Aeronautical Company, ENAER. Through the integration of Collins Aerospace’s NP2000 propeller system, the service expects to keep its Hercules aircraft in operation until at least 2043, removing any immediate requirement for replacement.
This upgrade is among Chile’s most ambitious military aviation recovery and logistics modernisation programmes. The introduction of eight-bladed propellers, new electronic control systems and comprehensive structural inspections has significantly enhanced aircraft performance, increasing take-off thrust, reducing vibration and cutting maintenance time. Under this approach, the FACh has prioritised extracting the greatest possible service life from platforms it already knows and can support domestically before pursuing entirely new acquisitions.
C-390 Millennium as a complementary capability
However, retaining the modernised Hercules does not necessarily rule out the eventual arrival of the C-390 Millennium. On the contrary, the two platforms could operate together under a complementary model. While the KC/C-130H fleet continues to undertake logistics, Antarctic and strategic support roles, the C-390 would provide greater speed, automation, payload and operational reach, as well as faster response times for tactical, humanitarian and aeromedical evacuation missions.
At FIDAE 2026, Embraer specifically sought to reinforce this message by displaying a KC-390 Millennium in Chile. It used one of the Southern Hemisphere’s foremost aerospace and defence events to bring the aircraft closer to prospective regional customers. The Brazilian aircraft’s presence also enabled a comparison with other platforms at the exhibition, including the Airbus A400M Atlas of the Spanish Air and Space Force. Making use of FIDAE’s substantial international exposure, the A400M also delivered a notable flying display at Pudahuel Air Base, pushing its capabilities to the limit while its appearance was supported by a strong commercial campaign aimed especially at the FACh.
Potential Embraer and ENAER industrial cooperation
Another relevant consideration is the potential industrial relationship that could emerge between Embraer and ENAER should future negotiations progress. Although no specific agreements have emerged so far, Chile’s growing technical capacity for deep maintenance of tactical transport aircraft creates opportunities for cooperation in logistical support, maintenance, systems integration and a possible transfer of capabilities.
From an operational perspective, the C-390 Millennium offers a package of capabilities that is particularly appealing for Chile. The aircraft can conduct tactical and strategic transport, aeromedical evacuation, air-to-air refuelling, troop airdrops and humanitarian operations. With a payload of approximately 26 tonnes and speeds exceeding those of the traditional C-130, Embraer is seeking to establish it as a multi-role solution adaptable to different regional scenarios.
Even so, Gomes Neto’s comments indicate that any Chilean decision will probably take shape over the medium term. Unlike Colombia, where a recent C-130 accident has accelerated the fleet-renewal debate, the FACh currently has a modernised logistical structure and a service-life extension programme fully under way. In this context, Chilean interest in the C-390 appears to be directed more towards future capability planning than an immediate replacement requirement.
