Mexican Navy delivers 718.54 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Venezuela

In support of communities affected in Venezuela, Mexican Navy ships ARM “Papaloapan” and ARM “Huasteco” completed their mission by delivering 718.54 tonnes of humanitarian aid at the port of La Guaira. The shipment, dispatched by the Mexican Government, contained food, bottled water, hygiene and cleaning products, as well as medical supplies.

Mexican coordination for Venezuela relief

The operation was carried out on the instructions of Mexico’s President and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. The Ministry of the Navy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs coordinated the delivery as part of Mexican assistance for communities impacted by natural phenomena.

Humanitarian aid arrives in La Guaira

The two ships carried 2,585 cubic metres of humanitarian assistance, corresponding to the 718.54 tonnes reported by Mexican authorities. During the offloading process, 100 members of the Mexican Navy’s Emergency Response Brigades (BRE) took part in unloading, organising and distributing the supplies.

The work was undertaken alongside the relevant Venezuelan authorities. In addition, the Ministry of the Navy’s water treatment plants operating in Venezuela produced more than 259,700 litres of drinking water and supported 8,867 families.

Through this operation, Mexico increased the volume of supplies sent to Venezuela to more than 4,588 cubic metres. The Ministry of the Navy stated that this total represents roughly 1,100 tonnes, transported through the maritime bridges established on 15 July and 10 August.

ARM “Papaloapan” and its transport capability

The ARM “Papaloapan” (A-411) is a Newport-class tank landing ship. The Mexican Navy commissioned the vessel in 2001, after it had served with the United States Navy from 1969 until that year as USS “Newport” (LST-1179).

The ship has a full-load displacement of 8,450 tonnes, an overall length of 159.2 metres and a beam of 21.2 metres. Its propulsion system consists of six diesel engines and gives it a maximum speed of 20 knots, while it can carry up to 420 troops.

Mexican Navy record in international aid missions

The operation also forms part of the Mexican Navy’s history of international assistance missions. In 2005, the ARM “Zapoteco” (AMP-02) deployed alongside ARM “Usumacinta” on a mission to Indonesia following the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, carrying water treatment plants, food and medical supplies.

The Ministry of the Navy said that the shipment to Venezuela was made possible through coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and various institutions, companies, foundations and civil organisations. The supplies were gathered to meet the needs of affected communities, while naval personnel assisted with the unloading and distribution work.
