Chinese PLAAF aircraft arrive in Egypt for Eagles of Civilization 2026

Open-source intelligence (OSINT) imagery circulating in recent hours has revealed that aircraft from the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) have arrived in Egypt to take part in the combined Eagles of Civilization 2026 exercise. Over the coming days, the drills will bring together Chinese and Egyptian fighter aircraft, transport aircraft, and airborne command-and-control platforms.

The deployment marks another step in the military cooperation between Beijing and Cairo. In particular, it will allow the air arm of the Asian giant to train and operate beyond its usual East Asian theatre, while demonstrating its strategic power-projection capabilities.

Chinese PLAAF aircraft deployed for Eagles of Civilization 2026

The Chinese detachment comprises at least six Shenyang J-16 fighters, supported by a KJ-500 airborne early-warning and control aircraft, a Y-20 transport aircraft, and a Z-20 helicopter. The aircraft were previously sighted at Karachi Airport in Pakistan during their ferry flight to Egypt, making it possible to identify some of the assets included in the contingent dispatched by Beijing.

The involvement of the J-16 is among the most notable aspects of this edition of the exercise, as it would be the first time this aircraft type has taken part in Eagles of Civilization. Its operation outside China is also unusual for the fighter, which had previously been seen abroad during the Indus Shield exercise conducted with Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the KJ-500 will add an airborne early-warning and control capability to the detachment, while the Y-20 will provide support for transporting personnel and equipment. A Z-20 has also been observed, although its precise role during the activities has not yet been publicly confirmed.

Air-combat and search-and-rescue training in Egypt

The Eagles of Civilization 2026 exercise will take place in Egypt from mid-August to early September. Throughout the manoeuvres, the two countries’ air forces are expected to train in air-combat tactics, gaining air superiority, and search-and-rescue operations, as well as rehearsing the deployment of aviation units under different scenarios.

This will be the second edition of the combined China–Egypt exercise, held amid expanding military cooperation between the two countries. For the PLAAF, such activities also offer an opportunity to operate aircraft and support systems in a geographical setting different from its usual Indo-Pacific theatre. Egypt, for its part, is strategically located between Africa, the Middle East and the Mediterranean.
