The Brazilian Army is moving forward with a new phase in modernising its command, control and communications capabilities by upgrading the Infantry radio vehicles used as part of the Integrated Border Monitoring System (SISFRON).

The project, involving Modirum GESPI, will convert and modernise these mobile platforms by fitting new communications systems, onboard equipment and operational structures designed to expand the exchange of information between military units.

SISFRON radio vehicles and command-and-control modernisation

Rather than merely updating equipment, the initiative forms part of a wider change in how the Brazilian Army conducts its operations. In an environment where the speed of information has become decisive on the modern battlefield, communications systems play a strategic role in ensuring situational awareness and coordination among the Brazilian Army’s various elements.

Radio vehicles act as key nodes in the Army’s command-and-control network, linking deployed troops, command centres and monitoring systems. Upgrading these assets increases data transmission capacity, improves integration between units and strengthens operational responsiveness across vast areas, particularly along Brazil’s border regions.

SISFRON’s integrated border surveillance network

Established as one of the Army’s Strategic Programmes, SISFRON is intended to create an integrated network of sensors, radars, communications systems and control centres, expanding Brazil’s ability to monitor and protect its borders-among the largest stretches of land overseen by a military force anywhere in the world.

As it has evolved, the programme has moved beyond a structure solely focused on physical border monitoring to incorporate network-centric warfare concepts, with closer integration between sensors, operational units and decision-making centres.

Modernising the radio vehicles supports this shift by enabling traditional platforms to operate as connected elements within a digital command-and-control architecture. This capability is essential for surveillance operations, territorial defence and joint actions with other government bodies.

Installing new onboard systems in the radio vehicles marks another step in developing SISFRON’s technological infrastructure, increasing the Brazilian Army’s ability to operate in environments where connectivity, mobility and rapid access to information are decisive factors in accomplishing missions.

Communications in Brazil’s border regions

In border areas marked by long distances and logistical challenges, the availability of modern communications assets enables greater integration between units, better operational coordination and more efficient use of Brazilian Army resources.
