Almirante Saldanha Polar Vessel construction progresses ahead of schedule

The Almirante Saldanha Polar Vessel, the Brazilian Navy’s future research and logistics-support platform, continues to make progress during construction and is becoming one of the country’s most strategically important projects currently under development. Intended to expand Brazil’s presence in Antarctica, the vessel marks a major operational and scientific advance within the Brazilian Antarctic Programme.

Concerns recently emerged over potential construction delays following a strike at the Estaleiro Jurong Aracruz shipyard. More recent investigations, however, show that work on the vessel was never halted, even while the industrial action was under way. The shipyard introduced measures to sustain the pace of activity, ensuring the schedule continued without significant effects.

With the strike now over, the outlook is even more encouraging. Construction of the Almirante Saldanha Polar Vessel is running ahead of the original plan, demonstrating both effective project management and the commitment of the teams involved. Recent images from the shipyard show substantial structural progress, with blocks already joined together and the superstructure at a visibly advanced stage.

Design for Antarctic operations

Built for deployment in extreme conditions, the vessel will have a reinforced hull with a polar classification, enabling it to operate in areas where ice is present. Its diesel-electric propulsion, together with modern navigation and positioning systems, will provide high levels of efficiency and safety during extended missions in the Southern Ocean.

Measuring approximately 93 metres in length and capable of remaining at sea for more than two months, the Almirante Saldanha will serve as a high-level scientific platform. Fitted with advanced laboratories and oceanographic sensors, it will enable Brazil to expand research into fields including climate change, marine biodiversity and glacier dynamics-subjects central to the global scientific agenda.

Scientific research and logistical support

Alongside its scientific role, the ship will be vital in supporting Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Station, carrying supplies, equipment and personnel through one of the planet’s most demanding environments. This logistical capability is essential to maintaining Brazilian operations on the Antarctic continent.

Construction within Brazil, coordinated by EMGEPRON, strengthens the Defence Industrial Base while directly helping to create skilled employment and support technology transfer. This initiative is aligned with the revival of high-value shipbuilding in Brazil.
