OpenAI is rolling out a special version of ChatGPT for teenagers. It will be enabled automatically for users under 18.
OpenAI already offers parental controls, allowing parents to manage how their children use ChatGPT. The company is now stepping up safeguards for teenagers using its flagship product with the launch of ChatGPT for Teens. While Anthropic, Claude’s creator, bans under-18s from its service, OpenAI believes artificial intelligence should support teenagers’ learning and encourage their creativity, provided the right protections are in place. To make teenagers’ use of its AI safer, the company is introducing a separate product for this group of users.
ChatGPT for Teens introduces stronger safeguards
This new version of ChatGPT is activated automatically when a user states that they are aged between 13 and 17, or when OpenAI’s detection algorithms identify someone as being under 18. With ChatGPT for Teens, OpenAI limits users’ exposure to harmful content or material unsuitable for a teenager’s development. The company has also adapted its models so that ChatGPT for Teens avoids behaviours that could create emotional dependence on artificial intelligence.
“ChatGPT must not use romantic language, encourage emotional dependence, or suggest that it has feelings or consciousness. These enhanced safeguards are intended to promote healthy, reality-based relationships,” the company explains. Other protections include a feature that will regularly advise teenagers to take a break, as well as an indicator reminding them that they are speaking to an AI.
Teenagers’ ChatGPT is also designed to support learning
As well as increasing safeguards for teenagers on ChatGPT for Teens, OpenAI is adapting its AI to make learning easier. Through “Study Mode”, for instance, ChatGPT can walk a teenager through solving a problem step by step instead of simply providing the answer. When the AI detects that a user may be trying to obtain a direct answer for homework, it can redirect them to this learning-focused mode.
Study Mode, quizzes and revision tools
Quizzes and educational visualisations to help prepare for exams are also available. Teenagers or their parents can set study hours, during which Study Mode will be enabled by default.
In short, OpenAI is seeking to highlight AI’s benefits while reducing its risks. The company has already said that it will continue introducing new features for ChatGPT for Teens.
