The Argentine Navy’s presentation of the “Dédalo” Plan yesterday opened a five-year phase in which the Naval Aviation Command will undergo extensive restructuring, alongside the effective and gradual retirement of several platforms that have been in service for decades. Among them are the Sea King helicopters, in their various versions, which have supported different deployments over many years. However, as has happened in other services, the twilight of the “King of the Sea” can already be seen on the horizon.

Sea King helicopters and the Dédalo Plan

Although the information remains preliminary, the Dédalo Plan presentation, which will be implemented over the coming years, confirms a situation that has been apparent for decades: the Sea King is drawing ever closer to the end of its operational career and needs a suitable replacement, one that can no longer be based on remanufactured and modernised aircraft.

According to reports from Punta Indio Naval Air Base, the Navy has set 2031 as the year to begin withdrawing its SH-3 Sea King helicopters from service, although it has not officially provided further details.

This raises certain particular issues and concerns, as Sea Kings are currently the principal medium helicopters operated by the Naval Aviation Command. Their missions range from search and rescue (SAR) to transport and the essential logistical support required to resupply Antarctic Bases during the Summer Antarctic Campaigns.

Replacing the Argentine Navy’s Sea King fleet

For years, the Argentine Navy has assessed and weighed options to replace the Sea Kings, while proceeding with the purchase of refurbished and modernised aircraft from the United States, incorporating significant improvements in avionics and systems. It has even considered and pursued, unsuccessfully, the acquisition of additional helicopters to relieve aircraft already at the limit of their service life.

With confirmation that their withdrawal will start in 2031, the Naval Aviation Command now has a deadline to begin replacing and introducing a new platform to take over from the Sea Kings. This would mirror the approach taken with the 1st Naval Helicopter Squadron, which is set to replace its AS-555 Fennec light helicopters with new Leonardo AW109s in 2027.

Finally, according to sources consulted by Zona Militar on the matter, the Navy is seeking to assess and move forward with the acquisition of a new platform in line with what has already been outlined. Nevertheless, the process will always have to overcome the financial hardship affecting the institution and the lack of political interest and resolve, a decisive factor in the condition currently faced by Argentine naval aviation.
