The Chilean Army and Air Force announced through official channels that they took part in the joint Kakurinka 2026 exercise, held on the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego. According to the Army, the central aim of the activity was to test the ability to deploy and sustain a force over long distances and in varying weather conditions, presenting a substantial logistical challenge.

Kakurinka 2026 tests Chilean Army logistical capabilities
Captain Claudio Brante, commander of the Divisional Supply Company, commented: “Tierra del Fuego requires distances, travel times and weather conditions to be considered in every logistical decision. Training in this environment strengthens our ability to respond flexibly and sustain support for deployed units (…) Coordination with the Air Force made it possible to complement the capabilities of the V Division and expand sustainment options in a remote area.”
Kakurinka 2026 was coordinated by the Southern Joint Command, led by Brigadier General Jorge Hinojosa, who also serves as commander of the V Army Division. The No. 5 “Magallanes” Logistics Regiment was identified as the main unit participating in the activities, having been involved from the operation’s starting point in Punta Arenas.

Chilean Air Force support across Tierra del Fuego
A vehicle column was formed in Punta Arenas and travelled towards Porvenir, home to the No. 11 “Caupolicán” Motorised Detachment, the southernmost unit in the entire Chilean Army. After resupplying the detachment and exchanging logistical tactics and procedures, the column moved on towards the Timaukel commune, extending its support capabilities deep into Tierra del Fuego.
At this stage, Chilean Air Force assets were also incorporated. Their task was to airlift cargo from the mainland to Russfin, where it was subsequently distributed by the logistical formation of Army lorries. In particular, the exercise sought to assess coordination between air and ground assets, from receiving the supplies through to delivering them at different locations, as well as the performance of communications networks. Together, these efforts are expected to provide information to improve and apply comparable deployments in the future.
