Portugal’s Air Force completes historic KC-390 Millennium flight from Mozambique to Beja

Portugal’s Air Force has reached a new operational milestone by completing, for the first time, a mission linking Mozambique with Portuguese territory using one of its modern KC-390 Millennium aircraft. The flight from Maputo to Beja was completed in under 16 hours, highlighting the strategic transport and deployment capability the service has gained through the introduction of this advanced aircraft.

The operation took place on 23 February, when a KC-390 from No. 506 Squadron “Rhinoceroses” departed Maputo carrying more than six tonnes of cargo. Covering over 10,300 kilometres, the route included technical stopovers in São Tomé and Príncipe and Cape Verde before arriving at Air Base No. 11 in Beja at 00:25 the following day. With a total flying time of 15 hours and 25 minutes, the mission was carried out to high standards of safety and efficiency, confirming the operational reliability of the new transport aircraft.

Built by Brazilian company Embraer, the KC-390 Millennium entered service with Portugal’s Air Force in 2023 and was assigned to No. 506 Squadron. These twin-engined, multi-role military transport aircraft are designed for both tactical and logistical tasks, and can conduct air-to-air refuelling, medical evacuation, search-and-rescue operations, and the transport of personnel or heavy cargo. Able to accommodate up to 80 passengers or 74 medical stretchers, and featuring an adaptable cargo system, the aircraft offer the versatility that makes them an essential asset for domestic and international operations.

Portugal’s Air Force strengthens strategic reach

The deployment to Mozambique was a genuine test of the KC-390’s intercontinental capabilities, as well as its reliability during long and demanding missions. Portugal is therefore strengthening its standing as a modern air force prepared to operate beyond European airspace, while reinforcing its role in international alliances, particularly within the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, where the country seeks to increase its operational contribution.

This landmark flight came only weeks after Portugal’s Air Force received the fourth of its new KC-390 Millennium aircraft, carrying the number “26904”. The arrival of this aircraft, fitted with the air-to-air refuelling kit, marked another decisive step towards Full Operational Capability for the system, allowing missions to extend their range considerably and enabling it to operate as a tanker when required.

Through this successful operation, Portugal’s Air Force has confirmed the operational maturity of its new KC-390 fleet and reinforced its strategic deployment capacity, demonstrating the platform’s potential for international, humanitarian and co-operation missions within the Atlantic community.
