Russian Pacific Fleet receives Tigr-M 4×4 armoured vehicles

As part of efforts to strengthen its land-based capabilities, the Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet has announced the delivery of new Tigr-M 4×4 armoured vehicles. They will be allocated among the various anti-sabotage units stationed in the Kamchatka and Primorye regions. The organisation’s press service has confirmed the development to state media, stating that the vehicles will enable personnel to use the new remotely operated Arbalet-DM combat module, which has reportedly been specifically developed to improve the effectiveness of the vehicle’s integrated weaponry.

Russian media added that the Tigr-M vehicles supplied to the Pacific Fleet feature armour providing a high level of ballistic protection, along with a modern jammer designed to neutralise radio-controlled explosives that may be deployed by an adversary. Each vehicle is also said to have an automatic tyre-pressure regulation system and an engine pre-heater, particularly useful in the weather conditions found in both regions.

Arbalet-DM combat module and its capabilities

Regarding the Arbalet-DM module itself, Russian reports state that it is fitted with a fully stabilised 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm machine gun, allowing the vehicle crew to operate it while on the move without major difficulty. This armament is supported by high-definition cameras capable of generating thermal images and integrated laser rangefinders, a package said to allow targets to be detected at distances of up to 2.5 kilometres.

Given the geographical environment in which they will operate, it is also worth noting that the module remains functional at temperatures of 40 degrees below zero. In addition to the advantage of operating the weapon from inside the vehicle, the Arbalet-DM is equipped with smoke grenade launchers that can conceal its movements, as well as storage for between 450 and 750 rounds, depending on the calibre.

Pacific Fleet deployments around the disputed eastern islands

Beyond the technical strengths of the new Tigr-M 4×4 vehicles acquired by the Russian Navy, the Pacific Fleet has recently completed another round of missile exercises around the eastern islands disputed with Japan since the end of the Second World War, when they became Soviet possessions. This included the deployment of Bastion coastal-defence batteries on Iturup Island, known as Etorofu in Japan. It would therefore not be surprising if the procurement of these new vehicles is intended to reinforce the islands’ defences and the facilities based there in light of lessons learned, although there is no official confirmation of this.
