Argentine Air Force and Navy begin P-3C Orion and F-16 integration
On 27 August, the Argentine Air Force and Argentine Navy took their first tangible step towards the operational integration of their new air capabilities through a technical exchange day at the Río Cuarto Materiel Area facilities. Personnel from Naval Air Force No. 3, which operates the P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft, took part in the activity, which sought to advance capability co-ordination with the Air Force’s F-16 Squadron.

According to the Argentine Air Force, the event included presentations on the combat capabilities of the F-16AM/BM weapon system, while several areas for integration were assessed alongside United States government personnel. The topics considered included developing and standardising procedures, as well as introducing tactical networks capable of creating a shared information-exchange architecture between the two platforms for future operational exercises. In this regard, the meeting marked the first formal move towards the joint use of capabilities that have, until now, largely developed independently.
The activity had been previewed by Zona Militar on 24 August, when it reported that, after completing their participation in Exercise Fraterno XXXIX, the Argentine Navy’s P-3C Orion aircraft would deploy to the Río Cuarto Materiel Area to work with the Air Force’s F-16s. The central focus was precisely the integration of data links between both platforms, a capability of particular importance given that the P-3Cs are assigned to maritime surveillance and reconnaissance missions, whereas the F-16s form the new core of Argentina’s supersonic combat aviation.

Expanding F-16 and P-3C Orion fleets
The introduction of this interoperability capability is also taking place alongside the expansion of both weapon systems. For the F-16 fleet, the Argentine Air Force expects to receive a second batch of six aircraft from Denmark by late September, bringing forward a delivery schedule that had initially been planned for December. The arrival of these aircraft will enable the gradual expansion of the 24 F-16AM/BM fleet acquired, while helping to consolidate its operational capability at the Río Cuarto Materiel Area.
Meanwhile, the Argentine Navy is close to receiving a third P-3C Orion, which is still undergoing preparation work in the United States. The aircraft, serial 3298 and previously operated by Norway, completed inspection and maintenance work and was progressing through its painting process before being transferred to Argentina. More recently, the Navy stated that it expects to receive this aircraft during October, increasing the availability of assets for maritime surveillance and reconnaissance tasks over the South Atlantic and the Exclusive Economic Zone.
Future joint operations for the P-3C Orion and F-16
Looking ahead, the integration of the P-3C Orion and F-16 could become one of the most significant manifestations of the Argentine Armed Forces’ air-capability modernisation process. The ability to share tactical information between maritime patrol aircraft and combat fighters would support a multidomain operational framework, broadening surveillance, detection and response capabilities against different types of threat. Within this context, the Río Cuarto event was not merely a technical exchange, but the starting point for establishing joint procedures and capabilities that can later be validated through operational exercises.
