Brazil donates Bell 412 and Bell Jet Ranger III helicopters to Paraguay and Uruguay

As part of its policy of cooperation with regional partners, the Brazilian government is moving ahead with the donation of Bell 412 and Bell Jet Ranger III helicopters to the Armed Forces of Paraguay and Uruguay, respectively. Approved by the National Congress and published in the Official Gazette of the Union, the measure covers aircraft from the Federal Police and the Navy which are now regarded as obsolete within Brazil’s Armed Forces and security inventory.

Bell 412 helicopters for Paraguay and Bell Jet Ranger III aircraft for Uruguay

Under the official decree, Paraguay will receive two Bell 412 Classic helicopters from the Federal Police Aviation Command, while Uruguay will be given two Bell Jet Ranger III helicopters from Brazilian Naval Aviation. The aircraft will be handed over in their present condition, with Brazil meeting the transport costs. The initiative reinforces military cooperation among the Southern Cone countries, which have strengthened their links in defence, training and logistical support in recent years.

For Uruguay, the Jet Ranger donation forms part of a longstanding relationship between the two navies. In 2013, the Brazilian Navy transferred an Esquilo AS355 F-2 helicopter to the Uruguayan Navy, enabling Uruguayan Naval Aviation to begin operations aboard the aircraft carrier ROU General Artigas and even to take part in Antarctic missions. The arrival of the new Bell 206B-3 helicopters will enhance training and coastal-patrol capabilities, allowing the Navy to reach its ideal operational complement of three aircraft of the same type, with direct gains in maintenance, training and availability.

Paraguay expands its capabilities with Brazilian equipment

Paraguay, meanwhile, is continuing to broaden and acquire new capabilities through equipment donated by Brazil. Alongside the helicopters, the Paraguayan Army will receive six 105 mm M108 self-propelled artillery vehicles, marking the first time this type of weaponry has entered its arsenal. According to Paraguayan Army Commander General Manuel Rodríguez, the units are in good operational condition and will provide new doctrinal and tactical mobility capabilities. The package also includes a 122-metre aluminium floating pontoon and EE-11 Urutu 6×6 armoured vehicles, which will progressively join the country’s vehicle fleet.

Regional military cooperation in the Southern Cone

These transfers are part of the modernisation and reorganisation of equipment in service with the Brazilian Armed Forces, intended to optimise resources and deepen regional cooperation. In this context, Brazil reaffirms its role as a key player in Southern Cone military integration, while Paraguay and Uruguay increase their operational capabilities by acquiring assets that improve their autonomy, training and ability to respond to emergencies and joint missions.
