Patria conducted a remote-operation demonstration of a Patria AMV (Armoured Modular Vehicle) located in Finland from a control centre in Tokyo, Japan, more than 7,800 kilometres away. Organised by the Embassy of Finland in Japan on 25 and 26 August, the event was attended by representatives from Japan’s Ministry of Defence and defence-sector companies.

Patria AMV remote-operation demonstration between Finland and Japan

For the remote demonstration, the Patria AMV was positioned at the Parola military test range in Finland, while the Remote Operations Centre was established in Tokyo, Japan. The Patria AMV’s integrated remote-operation concept combined 5G connectivity, drive-by-wire technology, real-time situational-awareness information delivered by the Patria DOME system and supplemented by ICEYE satellite data. It also incorporated Nokia, SAVOX and Basemark technologies for communications and visibility, alongside Telia’s secure connectivity systems for data transfer.

Janne Räkköläinen, Patria’s Vice President for the Global Market Area, said: “The demonstrations were a great success, attracting a large number of attendees from Japan’s Ministry of Defence and defence-related companies. This event reflects the strong interest in Patria’s remote driving capabilities both in Japan and internationally, as well as the trust placed in our local partner, Japan Steel Works.”

Patria-Japan industrial relationship

This proof of concept builds on the established industrial links between Finnish company Patria and Japan surrounding the Patria AMVXP 8×8 VCBR, selected by the Ministry of Defence in December 2022 as its future armoured personnel carrier. Under the Wheeled Armoured Personnel Carrier (WAPC) programme for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, Patria AMVXP 8×8 vehicles have been manufactured under licence by Japan Steel Works in Japan since 2023, following the local production agreement with Patria.

Patria remote-operation capabilities

According to Patria, this demonstration between Finland and Japan highlights the integrated operational concept and its potential for future applications involving unmanned logistics operations, convoy escort duties and autonomous waypoint navigation. The proof of concept also demonstrates the AMV vehicle’s potential as a modular platform with remote-operation capabilities and greater autonomy, attributes that are key in light of the nature of future remote operations.

“It is a practical demonstration of how defence technology, telecommunications and advanced situational awareness can be combined into a credible remote-operation concept. For customers and partners, it shows that heavy armoured vehicles can be connected, monitored and controlled over long distances when the vehicle architecture, network environment and supporting technologies are designed to work together from the outset,” states a press release from Finland’s Patria.
